"Everybody that even gives a hint of being a birther โ€ฆ even a little bit of a hint, like, gee, you know, maybe, just maybe this much of a chance, they label them as an idiot. Let me tell you, I'm a really smart guy," he said.

He explained the source of his doubt: "He grew up and nobody knew him. You know? When you interview people, if ever I got the nomination, if I ever decide to run, you may go back and interview people from my kindergarten. They'll remember me. Nobody ever comes forward. Nobody knows who he his until later in his life. It's very strange. The whole thing is very strange," he added.

Trump actually said something similar, albeit not quite as birther-y, at CPAC in February:

"Our current president came out of nowhere. Came out of nowhere. In fact, I'll go a step further: the people that went to school with him, they never saw him, they don't know who he is. Crazy!โ€

As New York magazine points out, plenty of people have vivid memories of Obama as a child, and there's even a kindergarten class picture available to anyone who cares to look! We give self-proclaimed "really smart guy" Trump credit for being intelligent, though. And that's why we don't believe for a minute that these alleged doubts of his are legit. Rather, he knows that keeping this ridiculous question alive in the minds of some Americans will weigh in favor of getting a Republican elected in 2012 โ€” either Trump himself or someone who will serve his interests.
