Well, what we’ve all known finally became official when Donald Trump received enough delegates to clinch the GOP presidential nomination Thursday.

Although California and New Jersey will hold their primaries June 7, according to CNN, Trump has reached the 1,237 delegates needed to secure the Republican spot.
The news station notes that Trump won’t formally accept the party’s nomination until the delegate votes are cast at the GOP convention in July. Despite an anti-Trump campaign titled “Never Trump” and a less-than-enthusiastic reception from his own party members, Trump’s momentum has proved unstoppable, and a contested convention is unlikely.
“No one in American history has moved from a June 16 announcement to a May 26 winning of a majority,” former House Speaker Newt Gingrich tweeted Thursday. Gingrich, who is rumored to be on Trump’s short list for vice presidential candidates, added that “Trump’s achievement is remarkable.”
Trump told those gathered at a news conference in Bismarck, N.D., that he’d clinched the nomination, and he took the chance to take a swing at Democratic presidential front-runner Hillary Clinton.
“Here I am watching Hillary fight, and she can’t close the deal,” Trump said.
