Maryland officials are looking into the death of an inmate who was found dead in a cell mysteriously filled with steam.

According to the Daily Mail, Louis Stanley Leysath III was found dead on Friday in his cell at the Jessup Correctional Institution. He was reportedly serving a life sentence after his conviction for strangling his girlfriend in 2008.
Prison staff attempted to perform CPR on him, to no avail, according to the news site. There was no indication of where the steam found in his cell came from. Foul play is not suspected at this point because the inmate had a cell to himself, prison spokesman Mark Vernarelli said, but a thorough investigation was still ordered to determine whether staff acted accordingly before the inmate was discovered. It was not clear whether his death, which has been described as occurring “under unusual circumstaces,” was an accident or suicide. Autopsy results are “incomplete,” the site says.
