In an attempt to stop the bleeding from claims made by two shoppers, the CEO of Barneys New York has issued a Facebook apology and hired a civil rights expert to review the treatment of customers, the New York Post reports. The move comes days after two young African Americans claimed that they were accosted by police after making purchases at the high-end retailer because they were black.

CEO Mark Lee took to Facebook to offer this public apology: "Barneys New York believes that no customer should have the unacceptable experience described in recent media reports, and we offer our sincere regret and deepest apologies."

According to the Post, Michael Yaki, who sits on the U.S. Commission on Civil Rights, has been retained and is expected to review the operations and procedures at the store.ย

New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg also came out in defense of those who feel that they've been mistreated by stores because of their race, encouraging them to file complaints with the Civilian Complaint Review Board or the Human Rights Commission, the Post reports.
