Black America Web reports that the Rev. Al Sharpton joined 250 union workers and supporters at a rally urging New Haven, Conn., Mayor John DeStefano to negotiate with the city’s unions in a fight that he likened to the civil rights battles of the 1960s.

By refusing to negotiate, New Haven labor leaders say, DeStefano has denied workers the right to collective bargaining.
“We will stay in the streets until you come to the table,” Sharpton said on Monday at the rally, organized by the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees.
“Martin Luther King died fighting for the rights of union workers,” Sharpton said.
King was assassinated April 4, 1968, in Memphis, Tenn., where he was supporting AFSCME sanitation workers.
