The University of California, Los Angeles is washing its hands of a $3 million gift from embattled L.A. Clippers owner Donald Sterling, the Associated Press reports.

The prestigious school says it will return a $425,000 installment on the gift and refuse to accept the remainder of the $3 million as a result of Sterling’s “divisive and hurtful comments [which] demonstrate that he does not share UCLA’s core values,” the university announced Tuesday.

The money was meant to support basic kidney research in the school’s Division of Nephrology, the AP reports.

On Tuesday, the NBA officially banned Sterling for life from all NBA events and facilities and fined him $2.5 million for racist comments he was heard making on a recording that was leaked to the media.
