President Donald Trump has seemingly cracked a vital code in his second term. Whenever he needs to invade a U.S. city or rile up his supporters against a common enemy, he does one thing to justify it… and Americans are starting to notice.

In his executive power, the president can declare a national emergency, which gives him the right to exert power in order to handle any one situation. For example, he declared an emergency when COVID-19 shut down the world in 2020. But now, many say the president is abusing his power just to fit his agenda.
So far in his second term, Trump has declared nine national emergencies using the 1976 National Emergencies Act. In the case of his federal takeover of Washington, D.C., Trump used the 1973 Home Rule Act to defend his actions– which would unofficially bring the total up to 10.
Here the full list of so-called national emergencies declared by the Trump administration
- Illegal border crossings
- Mexican cartels as terrorist groups
- Failure to expedite mining and drilling on federal lands
- Drugs coming in from Canada
- Drugs coming in from China
- Drugs coming in from Mexico
- Sanctions on the International Criminal Court
- International trade deficits
- Brazil’s prosecution of former President Jair Bolsonaro
- Crime in Washington, D.C. (an unofficial declaration)
All of these emergencies were declared in the span of seven months, which is a record amount in such a short time. In comparison to his first term, the president has outdone himself, and he doesn’t seem to be stopping any time soon. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent even told the Washington Examiner Monday (Sept. 1) “we may declare a national housing emergency in the fall.”
This would mark the 11th emergency, and political insiders fear he won’t end here.
Okla. Rep. Cleta Mitchell predicted Trump will use his emergency cheat code to rig future elections. “Maybe the president is thinking that he will exercise some emergency powers to protect the federal elections going forward,” the congresswoman said during a recent podcast episode. “I think that there are some areas in which the president can issue an executive order under existing law.”
Mitchell added, “One would be the overseas people who vote — deployed military and overseas citizens — the president has authority to appoint a designate to enforce that. And all of those are federal ballots.”
Trump isn’t the first president to call national emergencies. In fact, the last president to not declare a national emergency was George H.W. Bush in the early ’90s. Still, Trump stands only as the only president of recent times to use this are a playbook for governing the country. And what makes his record much more interesting is the overall lack of accountability he’s had to face in federal courts.
Yes, multiple federal judges have declared several of his past actions, including sending the National Guard to Los Angeles, illegal… but Trump doesn’t seem to be phased, especially because Congress is under Republican control. With that, there’s no telling what else is on his national emergency agenda, which is why every American should keep their eyes open.
