Wednesday night was the premiere of Spike Lee’s film Chi-raq, but after the premiere, he held on to his gun-control message and held a march in New York City’s Times Square.

Lee noted during the premiere and at the march that his movie was taking a direct aim at gun-control legislation. And with the premiere and protest being shortly after the San Bernardino, Calif., massacre, his message couldn’t have come at a better time.

“That’s what this film is about,” Lee told the New York Daily News. “We have to get legislation in place that’s going to make the United States of America safe for all Americans, despite the NRA and the gun manufacturers.”

Chi-raq will be released on Amazon.com Friday, Dec. 4.
