During a Senate hearing on Tuesday, Cruz said that the law didn’t hold any negative racial implications. Since many black people are victims of violent crime, Cruz argued, they need to be able to defend themselves.

“The notion that ‘Stand your ground’ laws are some form of veiled racism may be a convenient political attack, but it is not borne out by the fact remotely,” Cruz said, the Atlantic Wire reports.
