The 18-year-old collapsed on the court around 2 p.m. Lifeguards on duty at the recreation center immediately began to administer CPR until paramedics and police officers arrived at the scene. Awosogba died in a New Brunswick, N.J., hospital about an hour later.

Awosogba’s high school sports teacher spoke fondly of him. “He was a great kid,” said Christopher Yannazzo, the supervisor of athletics at East Brunswick High School. “He was a consummate team player. He worked hard. He did his job.”

Awosogba’s sister, Temi, a doctor, said that she thinks her brother suffered from a heart condition called “hypertrophic cardiomyopathy or HCM,” NJ.com reported Tuesday.

A medical examiner said that additional tests needed to be performed in order to determine the cause of death.
