Alicia Keys and Beyoncé’s “Put It In A Love Song” was an underrated classic back in the early 2000s. Fans loved it so much that a music video was even filmed, but it was never released. Ever wonder why it never made it to popular shows like MTV’s “TRL” or BET’s “106 & Park?”

Well, Mathews Knowles spilled some jaw-dropping tea during an interview with Carlos King – and it was so good, even King was too stunned to speak. We’ll fill you in.
“Put It In A Love Song” was a major bop on Alicia Keys’ album, “Elements of Freedom.” Produced by her now-husband, Swizz Beatz, fans were excited for the anticipated visual featuring Keys and Beyoncé. Both artists promoted the upcoming release, but as time went on, they quietly returned to their respective lanes without confirming a solid release date. The video never aired – leaving fans completely up in the air.
In an archived Essence interview, Alicia Keys explained the video simply didn’t come together as expected.
“Sometimes with creative things [it] all comes together and it’s (makes perfection kissing noise) and sometimes things almost come together and it’s better to just leave it,” Keys said in a 2020 interview. “So we love that song. We had a ball shooting the video. It just so happens that the whole thing, for some reason or another, didn’t quite come together so we just decided to leave it. And that’s what happened.”
Well, according to Mathews Knowles, that’s not exactly how he remembers it.
During the recent episode of Carlos King’s top-rated YouTube podcast, “Reality With The King,” King sat down with Knowles, father Solange and Beyoncé and former the manager of Destiny’s Child. The two chatted about everything from his early career to his oldest daughter’s success, but in one viral clip, King got straight to the nitty-gritty about the infamous video that never saw the light of day.
“What happened to the Alicia Keys and Beyoncé music video?” King asked Knowles with enthusiasm. “Where is it?”
According to Knowles, he got an unexpected phone call about the shoot’s location.
“I got a phone because I’m not a micromanger,” Knowles began. “And they’re in the projects, the hood, the ghetto – in Rio.”
The Carnival-esque video, directed by Melina Matsoukas, was filmed in the beautiful city of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
And then, Knowles dropped a surprising bombshell:
“Sony didn’t pay the gangsters,” the former Destiny’s Child manager said.
The camera immediately cuts to King, his face in complete shock. “And they had to be helicoptered out of there. It’s a whole lot that you don’t know, young man.”
King’s mouth hit the floor — and honestly, ours did too. “Yeah, it’s a lot that people don’t know,” Knowles added.
After Knowles rattled the internet with the tea, social media went nuts. “Not Sony didn’t pay the gangsters,” one TikTok user wrote.
“So the budget went to getting them out of the ghetto, lol?” another user wrote.
“Everytime Mathew Knowles do an interview, one thing is he’s going to spill the tea.” a third chimed in.
Like King said at the end of the interview, “We’ve got the song and we are glad that everyone is safe.”
