Borrowing a page from Madonna, who is still performing at 56, pop star Janet Jackson announced plans to release new music and embark on a world tour this year.

The multiplatinum singer and '90s superstar made the announcement on social media Saturday—her 49th birthday, surprising followers and garnering 4,700 retweets and 4,100 favorites. It's her first new studio album since 2008's Discipline, according to USA Today.

"I promised you'd hear it from my lips, and now you will," she explained in a video post. "This year: new music; new world tour; a new movement. I've been listening. Let's keep the conversation going."

Jackson has kept a relatively low profile since marrying Qatari business magnate Wissam Al Mana in 2012.
