According to ABC News, former slalom canoeist Joe Jacobi won the medal in the 1992 Summer Olympics in Barcelona. The medal was stolen from Jacobi’s car last month.

Chloe Smith, 6, spotted the shiny object near some trash June 17. Charlmonique Cunningham told the news station that her “very inquisitive, very spunky” daughter is always finding objects and bringing them home.

“Her dad instantly knew what it was; he had watched the news,” Cunningham explained. “He was aware that the medal had been stolen.”

Cunningham emailed Jacobi and confirmed that the medal Chloe found was indeed his medal.

Jacobi was speechless, Cunningham told the news station.

Jacobi rewarded Chloe with $500 for finding his medal and promised to visit her class in the fall.
