On Saturday, Tutuโ€™s family said that the surgical wound itself startedย showing signs of infection, and his wife, Leah, said in a statement that he was readmitted as a โ€œprecaution.โ€

Tutu, who has previously been treated for prostate cancer, was also hospitalized several times last year. His family has said that the cancer is under control.

Tutu, the first black archbishop of Cape Town, received the Nobel Peace Prize in 1984 for his efforts to end apartheid.

After the apartheid regime fell, Tutu served as chairman of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission at the direction of then-President Nelson Mandela.
