Virginia Attorney General Ken Cuccinelli

Virginia Attorney General Ken Cuccinelli II, who is anti-abortion, has issued a legal opinion allowing greater restrictions on abortion clinics. His legal opinion is drawing criticism from providers who say it could cause some of the facilities to close. Pro-choice advocates are saying that the attorney general's actions are an attempt to circumvent the General Assembly. Cuccinelli's opinion was a response to requests from Del. Robert G. Marshall (R-Prince William) and State Sen. Ralph K. Smith (R-Roanoke), who asked whether the state has the authority to regulate facilities that provide first-trimester abortions as well as the medical personnel who perform them. Marshall has asked Virginia Gov. Robert F. McDonnell (R) to implement the regulations and is calling this a victory for women and children across Virginia. Really? We don't see women involved in this decision-making process at all. We'd like to hear from actual women and children to find out what they think, as opposed to a bunch of men — who cannot bear children, and most of whom are not the primary caretakers of children — deciding what is best for women. Thank you, but women can think and speak for themselves. After all, it is 2010, not 1910 — or is it?
