Earlier this month, Roof was indicted on 33 counts, “including federal hate crime and firearms charges,” for the June 17 shooting at Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church that left nine people dead, CNN reports.

According to the news station, Roof, 21, was arrested in North Carolina a day after the attack and was taken back to South Carolina to face charges. He has reportedly admitted to law-enforcement officials that he committed the shootings, which ended the lives of nine worshippers, incuding the church’s pastor, the Rev. Clementa Pinckney, who was also a state senator.

If found guilty, Roof could face up to life in prison or the death penalty, depending on whether prosecutors decide to pursue the death penalty.
