Why Supreme Court’s MAGA-Friendly Redistricting Ruling Could Change Everything For Jasmine Crockett, Other Texas Dems

Under the Supreme Court temporarily ruling in favor of Trump, but where does it leave the Democrats, who are more than outnumbered.

President Donald Trump urging Republican-led states like Texas to alter their voting maps before the 2026 midterms, the Supreme Court has finally ruled in favor of the gerrymandering plan. But while Texas Gov. Greg Abbott and other GOP leaders are celebrating the major win, it’s Texas Democrats who will suffer greatly.

If you remember, we told you all about the president’s scheme to gain more Republican seats as his approval rating continues to fall nation-wide. Critics saw the move as a power play, arguing the plot will likely set a dangerous precedent during an already tense political time. Texas Democrats like Rep. Jasmine Crockett, Rep. Al Green and Rep. Nicole Collier were some of the few but mighty Black leaders raising alarm in their state. Now, their seats in Congress are in danger.

“This Court’s eagerness to playact a district court here has serious consequences,” Justice Elena Kagan said after the ruling. “The majority calls its ‘evaluation’ of this case ‘preliminary.’ The results, though, will be anything but.”

Texas’ new district map is expected to completely uproot the very few Democrats already in office.

Areas like Rep. Crockett’s District 30 — the Blue district serving over 70,000 Texans — are set to be taken over by Republican voters, who will likely vote out Crockett next year. As of now, the state has only 12 Democratic representatives to the 27 GOP Congressmen, data shows.

The Supreme Court’s ruling is a temporary order while the legal battle over Trump’s plan continues to unfold in court, Fox News reported. Meanwhile, Abbott praised the ruling as a political win for his party– not as an constitutional and American values issue.

Many Texas Democrats have already hinted at pursuing other public offices, including Rep. Crockett who will make an announcement on Monday (Dec. 8). But for folks like 78-year-old Rep. Al Green, the state’s new map could mean the end of his 11-term stint in Congress.

Rep. Greg Casar, who represents the 35th District, called the GOP plan an insult to Texans. “If Trump is allowed to rip the Voting Rights Act to shreds here in Central Texas, his ploy will spread like wildfire across the country,” Casar wrote in a statement. “Everyone who cares about our democracy must mobilize against this illegal map.”

Trump carried 27 districts in the 2024 presidential election, and now, it seems he’s looking to completely sweep the state under an unusual map, the Texas Tribune reported. If the 2024 election happened under the proposed GOP plot, Trump would’ve won in 30 congressional districts, according to reports. Even in districts where high Latinx and Black voters are present, Trump and other Republicans would easily become favored to win come election day.

But while it seems like all hope is lost for Texas Democrats, they can fight back by postponing the vote on the new map. We also told you folks like Rep. Collier fled the state this past summer in protest of the orginal gerrymandering proposal. Although she and the rest of Democrats eventually returned, they stalled the process long enough for Republicans to get mad… and we mean very mad.
