One brave Iowa student’s quick thinking likely saved their mother’s life as police were able to rescue her from a dangerous kidnapping before it was too late. According to the official Facebook page of the Fayetteville County Sheriff’s Office, the child boarded a school bus on the morning of Sept. 24, just before 7:30 am, headed to the local elementary school. The student handed the bus driver a note that read, “Call 911.”

Thankfully, the driver took the note seriously and called for help, because when police responded to the child’s home in the rural northeastern Iowa town of Westgate, they found the mother was being held by a man who had taken her phone and was physically abusing her, according to CBS 2 Iowa.
Authorities arrested 29-year-old Glenroy Stefand Miller, who they say had been abusing the woman throughout the night and threatening to kill her. Police found the woman with bruises on her face and reported that she had been kicked “hard enough to break two ribs and puncture a lung,” as CBS 2 Iowa reported. The Sheriff’s Office reported that Miller was on the way to the hospital with her until he changed his mind, thinking he would go to jail if he got caught.
Miller, who is originally from the Bahamas, has been charged with domestic abuse assault, second-degree kidnapping and obstructing emergency communication. He is sitting in the Fayette County Jail while he waits for his trial. He’s also being detained by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).
People on social media are praising the child for being so brave during a life-threatening situation.
“Wow. What a scary situation, kudos to the child for being so brave to get help. So glad the bus driver took them seriously and took action right away. Great work to the Deputies as well!,” wrote someone on Facebook.
