John Singleton, director of Boyz n the Hood, spoke about Cube’s career going from rapping about “fuck the police” (for which my 18-year-old son knows him) to being “Nick with all of the kids” (as my 4-year-old niece knows him) on family movies like Are We There Yet? Seriously, if you can cross generations like that, your career has come full circle.

“The mark of a true man is how many people he influences in his lifetime,” Singleton said. “That’s how I see Cube. When you coming up doing music, movies, just trying to be creative, you never figure you’ll be on the Hollywood Walk of Fame one day.”

Cube sent thanks to all the people who helped shape his career. “You don’t get here by yourself,” he said. “Today is not really about Ice Cube. It’s about all the people that helped me get here.”

The ceremony came on the heels of the release of the 25th-anniversary edition of his second album, Death Certificate.
