The fat lady has not yet sung on the outcome of the Oscar Grant murder trial. Ex-BART cop Johanes Mehserle is being investigated by the Department of Justice (DOJ) for the murder of Oscar Grant, 22. It is being investigated as a civil rights crime. Mehserle was convicted of involuntary manslaughter of Grant, who was being subdued on the ground by another police officer when he was shot and killed. The last high-profile case where the DOJ stepped in was the Rodney King beating. Any federal time that Mehserle would receive from a civil rights conviction would more than likely be served after he completed the sentence attached to the involuntary manslaughter verdict.
