According to the New York Daily News, Unicode Consortium, the coders behind emojis, will introduce a skin-tone modifier to their system to allow users to change the shade of the emoji of their choice.

Over the past two years, celebrities including Miley Cyrus and Tahj Mowry have voiced displeasure over the lack of emoji diversity.

Apple bore the brunt of dissatisfaction from consumers. In March, Apple representative Katie Cotton told MTV that the technology company was working with Unicode to create a wider offering of the characters.

“Our emoji characters are based on the Unicode standard, which is necessary for them to be displayed properly across many platforms. There needs to be more diversity in the emoji character set, and we have been working closely with the Unicode Consortium in an effort to update the standard,” Cotton said in a statement.

Smartphone users can expect the new emojis in June 2015, CNN Money reports.
