A Bronx, N.Y., man preparing for a trip to the Caribbean was taken into custody at LaGuardia Airport in Queens, N.Y., after authorities found 18 pounds of pot in his checked baggage, the New York Post reports.

According to the report, Kelvin Smith, whom the Post described as “a career … drug criminal,” was pulled off the plane Saturday morning after an alert went off before the flight was due to take off and the marijuana was found. A closer look at his luggage resulted in the discovery of 2.8 ounces of crack and 3 ounces of psychedelic mushrooms in his second bag, which had previously cleared the scan.
“This just shows you how stupid criminals can be,” a law-enforcement source told the Post. “You would have thought that a man of his experience would have known how this works.”
The Post reports that Smith acknowledged carrying the marijuana but denied having anything to do with the other drugs.
“It’s only marijuana,” he insisted.
