According to WLKY, Dequante Hobbs Jr. was with his mother and grandmother at their home Sunday evening when the tragedy occurred.

“They just shot through my window,” Micheshia Norment, Dequante’s mother, told the news station. “It hit my baby in his neck.”

Dequante was just being a regular 7-year-old, having a snack and playing with his tablet at the kitchen table, when he was hit.

“I tried to be CPR on him myself,” Norment said. “I got a pulse from him. … The ambulance came late; it took them too long to get here.”

The little boy was rushed to Norton Children’s Hospital, where he died Sunday night.

“There was no way they could save him,” the grieving mother lamented.

Police Lt. Emily McKinley confirmed that Dequante was not the intended target.

“There was a group of people out in this backyard and a fight happened. Someone pulled a gun and fired shots,” she said. “Obviously, no one intended for a 7-year-old to be killed, but unfortunately, that’s where we are today, and I’m pleading for them to come forward.

“If this doesn’t wake anybody up, then I don’t know what will,” the police lieutenant added.

Police are asking anyone with information to call the police tip line at 502-574-LMPD.
