According to WLKY, Dequante Hobbs Jr. was with his mother and grandmother at their home Sunday evening when the tragedy occurred.
โThey just shot through my window,โ Micheshia Norment, Dequanteโs mother, told the news station. โIt hit my baby in his neck.โ
Dequante was just being a regular 7-year-old, having a snack and playing with his tablet at the kitchen table, when he was hit.
โI tried to be CPR on him myself,โ Norment said. โI got a pulse from him. ... The ambulance came late; it took them too long to get here.โ
The little boy was rushed to Norton Childrenโs Hospital, where he died Sunday night.
โThere was no way they could save him,โ the grieving mother lamented.
Police Lt. Emily McKinley confirmed that Dequante was not the intended target.
โThere was a group of people out in this backyard and a fight happened. Someone pulled a gun and fired shots,โ she said. โObviously, no one intended for a 7-year-old to be killed, but unfortunately, thatโs where we are today, and Iโm pleading for them to come forward.
โIf this doesnโt wake anybody up, then I donโt know what will,โ the police lieutenant added.
Police are asking anyone with information to call the police tip line at 502-574-LMPD.
