A shooting in Birmingham, Ala.’s Gate City public housing community has left one dead and five injured, AL.com reports.

The incident occurred around 8:15 p.m. Sunday, about one hour after a peace rally in Lewis Park came to an end. According to Birmingham police spokesperson Sgt. Bryan Shelton, all six of the victims were innocent bystanders.
"When the shooting started happening, people started dispersing, which is why our scene is as large as it is,'' he told the site.
None of the five surviving victims were in critical condition, Shelton said. Police had also not officially identified the deceased victim; however, friends on the scene identified him as Bobby Clayton.
According to AL.com, authorities said that as many as 60 shots were fired, most likely from multiple guns. Authorities believe one person started shooting, and then others joined in.
Shelton told the site that it was disappointing that the tragedy occurred in a community that was trying to rally against violence.
"There's no excuse for it. It is senseless,'' he said. "It is disheartening, but we're going to continue to try to work hard and seek justice."
