They say politics makes strange bedfellows, but in one household, politics tore apart a 21-year marriage. Gayle McCormick, 73, dumped her husband after he disclosed to her that he was going to vote for Donald Trump.

“I was in shock,” she tells People magazine. “It was the breaking point. The Trump issue was the catalyst.
“It took us many, many months to make this decision,” she says. “We went to counseling and saw a priest. This wasn’t a snap decision.”
McCormick, a former prison guard, describes herself as a “Democrat leaning toward socialist,” and when the subject of politics would come up between the couple, typically she’d walk away. But she says she felt betrayed by her husband’s support of Trump.
“I felt like I had been fooling myself,” she says. “It opened up areas between us I had not faced before. I realized how far I had gone in my life to accept things I would have never accepted when I was younger.”
But here’s the kicker. According to McCormick, her husband didn’t even vote for Trump, but she knew she couldn’t be true to herself if she stayed.
“We are just too different,” she says. “It had more to do with the fact that I had not been true to myself for so long and that I had not stood up for myself for so long. I need to recapture myself.”
