โI was in shock,โ she tells People magazine. โIt was the breaking point. The Trump issue was the catalyst.
โIt took us many, many months to make this decision,โ she says. โWe went to counseling and saw a priest. This wasnโt a snap decision.โ
McCormick, a former prison guard, describes herself as a โDemocrat leaning toward socialist,โ and when the subject of politics would come up between the couple, typically sheโd walk away. But she says she felt betrayed by her husbandโs support of Trump.
โI felt like I had been fooling myself,โ she says. โIt opened up areas between us I had not faced before. I realized how far I had gone in my life to accept things I would have never accepted when I was younger.โ
But hereโs the kicker. According to McCormick, her husband didnโt even vote for Trump, but she knew she couldnโt be true to herself if she stayed.
โWe are just too different,โ she says. โIt had more to do with the fact that I had not been true to myself for so long and that I had not stood up for myself for so long. I need to recapture myself.โ
