As a part of his promo tour for his upcoming film “Marty Supreme,” Chalamet decided to hang out with Druski for the latter’s skit “Coulda Been Records.” The bit is a spoof of “American Idol” and other TV singing/talent competition shows, but even more ridiculous and silly. In the particular viral clip, Chalamet and Druski can be seen sitting at the judges table while a white girl with box braids enters. Before she can even begin, Chalamet asks her if she’s going to hit them with some Kirk Franklin. (We know you know who that is, so we won’t explain it.)

“Oh I love Kirk Franklin, I was gonna sing something else. But do you want me to sing you some Kirk Franklin?” the girl asks.

That’s when Chalamet shocks everyone in the room and blurts out Franklin’s 2004 gospel song, “Something About the Name Jesus.”

A pleasantly surprised Druski responds: “What you know about that boy?…What you know about Kirk Franklin man, I swear to God.”

Naturally, seeing a white boy like Chalamet belt out a beloved gospel classic like that took many by surprise by the time the clip began to circulate. For some Black folks online, they felt it was proof enough that the “Wonka” star was down with the community and found it amusing!

“Can’t stop thinking about timothee knowing who kirk franklin is,” wrote one user on X/Twitter.

“Hes overly cultured,” another said on TikTok with several laughing emojis.

“He never ceases to surprise me fr fr?!?!?” wrote one other person.

“now why is this man timothy chalamet out here knowing and singing gospel,” one other person said on X/Twitter.

However, for a whole other group of Black people, they weren’t all that impressed by Chalamet or his shenanigans and felt like he was lowkey pandering.

“Timothee chalamet out here cooning bruh. Kirk Franklin… fuck outta here bro… you will never be invited to the cookout bitch,” wrote one user on X/Twitter.

Another cautioned Black people against celebrating his move, writing: “Clapping like seals because he knows Kirk Franklin. Low racial self esteem.”

One other user questioned why Chalamet was hanging around Druski to begin with and likened it to a politician, “Why is he moving like a democrat trying to get the Black vote?”

Added one other person: “ya know… if Black ppl would just be normal when they see other folx knowing niche things about our culture and not take shit to the max/start glazing them, seeing a hwhyte boy from ny dress a certain way + have an appreciation for all music genres wouldn’t be a big deal.”

What do you think? Is Timothée doing too much or is he just a lover of good music and knows how to have a good time?
