These 13 Republicans Just Turned Their Back on Trump — Why It’s Crucial for 2026

Thirteen Republicans just sided with Democrats in a historic move to undermine Trump… but what does that really mean for the future of Congress?

With a nation as politically divides as the U.S., it’s rare that bipartisan leaders are able to come to a consensus. Yet, more than a dozen Republicans have broken their ranks to side with Democrats in an ongoing effort to undermine President Donald Trump, and everyone should be taking notice.

A recent vote in the U.S. House of Representatives ended in a 222 to 200 decision to advance a bill aiming to overturn the president’s executive order to strip federal employees of their union rights, according to reports. The March order sent off shockwaves as Trump ramped up efforts to reduce the federal workforce under the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) while cutting off union protections for hundreds of thousands of workers, News from the States reported.

At the time, federal courts ruled in favor of the president’s executive order, but now Congress is taking action. The House’s charge to counteract Trump has been led by Maine Democrat Rep. Jared Golden, who forced Congress to vote using a discharge petition. This Congressional procedure essentially gives congressmen the right to force a vote on any legislation only if it has majority support in the House… and lucky for him, 13 Republicans swung left to pass the measure.

This wouldn’t be the first time Republican leaders sided with Democrats against Trump. Ky. Rep. Thomas Massie and Penn. Rep. Brian Fitzpatrick were the only two House Republicans to vote no to Trump’s sweeping “Big, Beautiful Bill Act” this past summer, ABC News reported.

“Although there were some conservative wins in the budget reconciliation bill (OBBBA), I voted No on final passage because it will significantly increase U.S. budget deficits in the near term, negatively impacting all Americans through sustained inflation and high interest rates,” Massie said on X.

In response, the president ousted him on Truth Social. “Actually, MAGA doesn’t want him, doesn’t know him, and doesn’t respect him,” Trump wrote referring to Massie. The representative also criticized Trump’s foreign policy. “This is not Constitutional,” he wrote back in June.

With the exception of folks like Massie, House Republicans had been moving exactly according to the president’s wishes, even if it meant backing his most controversial policies on the economy and immigration. But as we come to the end of Trump’s first year in office, Americans are beginning to see the cracks within the GOP stronghold gradually get wider.

This is all leading up to next year’s midterms, an election both Republicans and Democrats have a lot riding on. The GOP is currently at risk of losing their majority in the House, and after Ga. Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene’s abrupt resignation, Republicans will only be one seat short of the minority.

And speaking of resignations… several Republicans have announced they’ll be stepping down from office or simply retiring in the next coming months. Over 15 Congressional leaders won’t seek reelection, which is surely going to to shake up the political table in an historic way, ABC News also reported. The country has arguably never witnessed this many young politicians retire in such a short period of time.

Still, Republicans have the advantage headed into the midterms. But as the Nov. 4 blue wave which swept the nation shows, now is not the time for voters of political leaders to get comfortable. Because we all know how unpredictable American politics can truly be.
