At the start of President Donald Trump’s second term, no one could’ve predicted one of his most loyal supporters, Georgia Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene, would resign from Congress after months of beefing with him. But now that the cards have been dealt and Greene has made a very public enemy of Trump, Americans are wondering what’s next for the infamous MAGA congresswoman.

Greene announced plans to resign from office in January 2026. The move shocked the nation, especially given the already shaky ground the Republican stood on within her own party. But despite her isolation from the president, the congresswoman will more than likely land on her feet.
“My district knows I ran for Congress trashing Republicans,” Greene previously said. “They voted for me because they agreed with that. My district’s not surprised.”
With Greene bowing out of Congress, many predicted she would either run for Senate or even president in 2028. She shut down speculation that she’s seeking a higher other office. But let’s be real: Greene has built her brand as an opinionated and sometime offensive political force, who is known for not backing down from a fight.
So why would her recent dissent from Trump be any different?
Still, Greene clarified on X that she’s not seeking the Oval Office. “I’m not running for President and never said I wanted to and have only laughed about it when anyone would mention it,” she tweeted.
Greene’s departure certainly isn’t the best news for the GOP, who can’t afford anymore significant losses come the 2026 midterms. Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp is expected to call a special election to fill Greene’s seat within 10 days of her departure, but experts say the race could result in a runoff and eventual Republican loss.
“Whoever wins this race could potentially be on the ballot five times between now and next November,” Republican strategist Brian Robinson told CBS News. But while Republicans are scrambling to hopefully fill the congresswoman’s void, Greene may be making moves on her own.
President Trump mentioned he’d like to see her return to politics, but the representative could be plotting to release her own book– as she has more than enough insight into MAGA and more than enough supporters who would buy it. Greene is keeping a tight lip about her future plans, but her options are open. She could even run for a local office, like mayor or governor. Given her detachment from the GOP, it wouldn’t be an easy task, but it’s certainly possible.
We previously told you Greene has been an avid opponent of Trump’s handling of the notorious federal files connected to disgraced sex offender Jeffrey Epstein. “Standing up for American women who were raped at 14 years old, trafficked and used by rich, powerful men should not result in me being called a traitor and threatened by the president of the United States whom I fought for,” she said.
Outside of her criticism of the president, Greene has also slowly been putting distance between herself and the Republican party. Unfortunately for her, many Republicans have written her off as “too far gone” and “turning liberal.” But on the other hand, this could work out in Greene’s favor if she ever decides to return to politics. Given that Trump’s approval is steadily declining, only time will tell if Greene is truly backing the right horse.
“Whether it’s Gaza, whether it’s Epstein, or whether it’s now the ACA [Affordable Care Act] credits, she’s been 180 degrees opposite of Trump,” an unnamed Republican told the Hill of the Georgia politician. “In fact, she’s been more Biden than she has been Trump.”
Other folks like New York Rep. Alexandria “AOC” Ocasio-Cortez theorized Greene is seeking revenge against Trump for allegedly telling her not to run for Senate. Regardless of her reasonings, one thing is clear: Greene is drawing a thick line between herself and the GOP, which all but spells that something more is brewing.
