Back in March, we said that the Democratic Party needed a charismatic white boy to stand up to President Donald Trump and charm away his MAGA army. The problem was that Dems had all but given up the fight: Everyone in the House and Senate who could appeal to Republicans were either toothless or so far left as to be radical.

The best we could come up with was Mathew McConaughey minus the banging on bongos naked and copious marijuana use. Since then, another white boy entered the chat.
Two weeks ago, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents (ICE) arrested 118 immigrants during operations in L.A. In response to that, Trump went over the head of California Gov. Gavin Newsom to not only send into Los Angeles the state’s National Guard but also 700 Marines to deal with the protests.
Newsome quickly and rightly identified Trump’s actions as a “breach of state sovereignty.” (That thing that defenders if the Confederacy swear up and down was the real reason for the Civil War.) And California’s attorney general quickly filed a lawsuit claiming that President Trump’s actions were unlawful and infringed on California’s right to control its National Guard.
Newsom was then asked about border czar Tom Homan’s threat to arrest him and he said something remarkable.
“He’s a tough guy…He knows where to find me. But you know what? Lay your hands off four-year-old girls that are trying to get educated,” he said, concluding by taking a not so veiled shot at not just the border czar, but the entire Trump administration.
“Come after me, arrest me," Newsom said. "Let’s just get it over with. ... I don’t give a damn, but I care about my community.”
Newsom is standing up to Trump with boldness and is anchored in clear and unwavering democratic values. He is using his position as governor to be a voice for the voiceless against a President who wants to disregard American laws so thet he can get his way.
Maybe we just found the white boy we’ve been looking for. Democrats in the House and Senate are still fumbling over their words as they try to respond to President Trump’s actions. Maybe they should follow the lead of Newsome. Clearly he is unafraid to speak truth to power.
