If you didn’t know, Tuesday (Jan. 20) marked day three of the Australian Open where Osaka was set to face off against Antonia Ruzic of Croatia in the Women’s Singles First Round. While many were understandably focused on how the ladies would show up on the court, it was Osaka’s off-court outfit that made headlines. And once you see the pictures, you’ll totally understand why. The four-time Grand Slam winner strutted out in a couture piece created in collaboration with Robert Wun and Nike.

The look saw her rock a turquoise and sea foam green flowy zip-up top with “organic tendrils” coming from the sleeves that was worn over a matching racerback. For her bottoms, she wore a pleated miniskirt over wide-legged pants on the bottom. In an interview with Vogue, Osaka explained that the outfit was inspired by having storytime with her two-year-old daughter Shai.

“There was an image of a jellyfish, and when I showed it to her she got so excited,” she said. “It translated beautifully into the movement and fluidity of the sheer layers on the dress and the jacket. When I saw it during the fitting, I remember thinking, ‘this is beautiful,’ but also feeling like the story wasn’t fully finished yet.”

In order to complete the look, that’s when Wun clocked in and added a truly iconic detail to the look. As you can see in certain pictures and in the clip below, both the umbrella that Osaka’s carrying with her and the white, wide-brimmed hat have a small butterfly sitting atop of them. That butterfly is a callback to Osaka’s appearance at the 2021 Australian Open and the viral video that came from it where a butterfly landed on her face and rested there.

“It felt symbolic of energy, transformation, and excitement,” Osaka said of the added detail.

Later, while doing a post-game interview on the court after her win, she added of her ensemble: “It’s modeled after a jellyfish. I’m so grateful that I get to do the things that I love. It’s really beautiful and shoutout to Robert Wun for doing this for me….There’s a butterfly on the hat. There’s a butterfly on the umbrella too. It has to do with the Australian Open I won in 2021, which I guess is a long time ago.”

Naturally, given the high-fashion and show-stopping nature of her fit, Osaka became the talk of the timelines, with many praising her for her chic outfit.

“That jellyfish vibe is so unique kinda makes me wanna see more bold designs from her,” wrote one user on X/Twitter.

“Naomi Osaka, you ICON,” said another.

“Naomi Osaka ate this look right on up! The amount of confidence and swag you have to have to walk out on court in this… iconic!” one other user wrote.

Added another: “Naomi Osaka truly never disappoints with her grand slam outfits. The umbrella, the hat, the netting, the trousers, the fringe etc. QUEEN!”

However, there were some who thought her ensemble was overkill.

“This is a tennis match, not a fashion show,” wrote one user on X/Twitter.

“I didnt watch Naomi Osaka or much of last year’s Slams. I just saw her outfit and she’s treating tennis like boxing. WTF is she wearing? I hope she gets her ass kicked,” said another. (Spoiler alert: she didn’t get her ass beat and won. So there’s that.)

For what it’s worth, this isn’t the first time Osaka has come onto the court in a fire fit, let’s not forget that jewel encrusted Labubu she rocked just in the last year. We don’t know what it is about sports stars slaying it in the fashion world that makes people so upset, but we’re here for it all. Keep killing it, Naomi!
