“The Golden Girls”

Before Girlfriends and Sex and The City, there was “The Golden Girls.” This iconic show remains the best sitcom of our time. The four sassy, single women of a certain age believed that friendship, good cheesecake, and witty comebacks were the ultimate problem-solvers. The endless banter and unapologetic humor were what made the show. And Black women everywhere still place it on their list of best girl shows.

“Seinfeld”

“Seinfeld” was an excellent, witty sitcom that we all can describe as a “show about nothing,” yet viewers couldn’t get enough of it. Its humor and the quirky situations made the show relatable to its audience, regardless of race.

“Three’s Company”

Jack Tripper (played by John Ritter), Janet Wood (played by Joyce Dewitt), and Chrissy Snow (played by Suzanne Somers) were new-age roommates that we all loved. Their physical comedy, very “cheeky” commentary, and the undeniable charm of Jack Tripper made chaotic moments hilarious yet lovable.

“Sex and The City”

Ahhh Sookie, Black girls everywhere still argue which of the leading ladies are they: Carrie Bradshaw (portrayed by Sarah Jessica Parker), Charlotte York (portrayed by Kristin Davis), Miranda Hobbes (portrayed by Cynthia Nixon) or Samantha Jones (portrayed by Kim Cantrell). The girls kept us entertained with their exciting dating and sex lives. Yet, the relationship that Bradshaw shared with Big became the show’s most significant storyline — full of passion but lots of heartbreak.

Young & The Restless

If you ever got to stay home from school, you probably were watching this staple daytime soap opera…with your black grandma. This long-running daytime soap opera follows the powerful Newman and Abbott families as they clash over business, love, and betrayal. Viewers enjoyed the dramatic situations, the glamorous characters, and the mix of romance and scandal. The show had people looking forward to its daily episode.

“Modern Family”

This hilarious show centered on three different but connected families navigating everyday life, with its mockumentary style being especially enjoyable to viewers. If you need a good show to binge-watch, this is the one.

“All In The Family”

Black people could and still can relate to Archie Bunker because who doesn’t have that beloved but a little bit prejudice Black uncle or grand daddy. Late-night reruns of “All In The Family” were more eventful when we see Archie and Edith Bunker on screen. The show followed an outspoken working-class man with controversial views and his family, who often held opposing opinions, as they navigated political and social issues of the 1970s. Its humor, bold approach to taboo topics, and a mix of comedy and commentary made it a truly enjoyable viewing experience.

“The Brady Bunch”

We loved “The Brady Bunch” for many reasons, including the fact that we understand blended families. The sitcom, known for its wholesome humor and relatable family dynamics, followed a family of six children navigating the joys and challenges of growing up together under one roof, captivating viewers’ hearts.

“Boy Meets World”

Viewers really enjoyed following Cory Matthews as he navigated school, friendships, and family life while learning important life lessons. The various nuances of life scenarios and heartfelt moments made every episode enjoyable.

“The Sopranos”

Tony Soprano balances the violent demands of organized crime and his daily family struggles while dealing with his own mental health. The storytelling in this series is impeccable and truly one of a kind.

“Full House”

Watching Danny Tanner raise his three daughters with the help of his brother-in-law Jesse and best friend Joey made every moment hilarious and heartwarming. The show was filled with life lessons, humor, and the loving bond of the Tanner family.

“Breaking Bad”

Easily one of the most brilliant shows to ever grace our screens, this edgy drama follows high school chemistry teacher Walter White as he transforms into a ruthless drug kingpin to provide for his family. Its captivating storytelling made it an amazing dark thriller.

“Game of Thrones”

Black Internet was filled with think pieces when this show was on. The sex, blood-thirst, the fighting, the magic and petty drama within the Seven Kingdoms was a phenomenal and well-written storyline that made the show worthy of binge-watching for everyone.

“Succession”

This dark comedic drama follows the Roy family, media moguls who battle one another for control of their global empire. The ruthless behavior among the family members kept viewers engaged and returning every week.

“Downton Abbey”

If you’re a fan of “Bridgerton,” you should know about “Downton Abbey.” The historical drama follows the distinguished Crawley family and their dedicated servants as they navigate love, work, and social life in the early 20th century. If you love a lavish English lifestyle, this show is definitely for you.
