As we previously told you, Jones shocked fans earlier this year when she announced that she’d be taking some time away from her duties on NBC’s “TODAY” to deal with “a family health matter.” Fast forward to May 2025, the mystery of the family health matter was sadly revealed on air when Jones’ co-hosts revealed that her husband, Uche Ojeh, passed away after “a courageous battle with an aggressive form of brain cancer called glioblastoma.”
“It’s a beautiful nightmare,” Jones said at the time. “My heart is shattered in a million pieces. The life that I’ve known since I was 19 is no more. I’ve always wanted kids and I have three kids of my own now and they’ve lost their dad.”
Jones and Ojeh had been married since 2007 and shared two boys and a girl together. Now, one of those children is experiencing a hardship of their own, albeit not to the same level of severity as their father. Speaking on Monday morning’s episode, Jones revealed that one of her sons suffered an injury that prevented him from playing soccer over the weekend.
Likening them to “growing pains,” Jones explained: “I was all over the universe this weekend. My son had a soccer game, like, an hour and a half outside of the city, and he’s injured. He’s having this— you know you hear about growth pains or growing pains? He’s actually having them, like, under his knees. It actually is common for boys when you’re growing.”
While the injury was disappointing for them both, Jones used the opportunity to instill a positive outlook in her child.
“I talked to him about being a good sport, so we still drove an hour and a half to be on the bench, she said.
She later quipped: “That was tough, ’cause I was sitting on the bench.”
Additionally, seeing as how it’s been about four months since Ojeh’s tragic death and only three weeks since Jones has been back to work, she explained on Monday that her “new normal” has been challenging and the first week back to work was hard. But she’s keeping a generally positive outlook on things and remains dedicated to kids and their collective healing as they grieve.
