R&B singer Monifah told Essence that that isn’t how she’d describe what she did by revealing, in a trailer for the new TV One series Super Divas, that she’s dating a woman. “I hate the term,” she says, “because I’ve never been anything but who I am, and I’ve lived my authentic life.”

It doesn’t get much more authentic than asking your teen daughter how she feels about your relationship in front of a national audience ( “Can you support our union?” Monifah demands in the clip), so kudos to this “super diva” for the unapologetic and dram- free (for reality television, at least) confidence of her announcement. Watch the trailer here.

R&B Divas debuts on Aug. 20 and stars Monifah, along with Faith Evans, Nicci Gilbert, Syleena Johnson and Keke Wyatt.
