Be clear: The independently published book isn’t about "Toya Wright," the reality-TV star, the public figureβ€”it’s about a mother, daughter, sister and a wife. In My Own Words is an authentic account of a woman brave enough to unearth some of her most intimate moments, including coping with the shooting deaths of her two brothers, Rudy and Josh.Β β€œI just felt like if I was to open up and write a book, I was going to open up,” Wright tellsΒ The Root forΒ Food for Thought, a video series celebrating the ingenuity and accomplishments of celebrities and influencers of the African Diaspora.

The writing process was cathartic for Wrightβ€”each page that she penned was a release, she says, and it took the 32-year-old less than three months to complete her memoir. But healing is a process, and though not completely healed, Wright says she's ready to share her story with the world.

We sat down with Toya Wrightβ€”a woman of silent strengthβ€”to discuss love and loss and to share some β€œfood for thought.”
