Black and Proud is a video series on The Root that focuses on the pride that our favorite black celebrities, tastemakers and thought leaders feel about being black. Many of them talk about our resilience and strength throughout history, and some talk about our undeniable talents, while others mention our dance skills, dopeness and more.

Whatever the reason, it’s clear that being black is an incredible experience despite society’s negative narratives around blackness.

Actress, writer and director Issa Rae is doing it for black millennials. Rae got started with her very own web series, The Misadventures of Awkward Black Girl, and years later has revolutionized TV with her HBO comedy, Insecure. In the series, Rae depicts her character’s experience as a single woman, navigating work, dating and friendships, all while remaining hella black. Respect.

Here’s why Issa Rae is black and proud.

Afro-Cuban woman that was born and branded in New York. When León isn't actually creating cool videos, she's thinking of cool videos that she can create.
