The president first announced the Gold Cards earlier this year, and it seems the website is now up and running. While millions of folks continue to wait for citizenship– with no word on how long it will take to approve their application– Trump is offering a leg up in the race for American citizenship…but there’s an expensive catch. Gold Card buyers can speed past the line for a pretty penny. Here’s everything you need to know:
What Does it Cost?
“Basically it’s a Green Card, but much better. Much more powerful, a much stronger path,” Trump told reporters. “A path is a big deal. Have to be great people.”
According to reports, buyers have to spit out $15,000 in order to pay for the Gold Card. The administration reported 10,000 applicants have already expressed interest in obtaining their Gold Card, according to Reuters. But if you thought the $15,000 price tag was more than enough, you’ll be shocked to find out how much Trump is demanding after the fact.
Applicants will go through an extensive background check and vetting process. Then, they’ll be required to make a “contribution” to the Department of Homeland Security. The website calls the payment a “gift,” but in reality, and additional $1 million will be demanded from migrants seeking entry into America.
Who Will Be Negatively Impacted?
Critics of Trump’s plan argue this another example of the president trying to make life in the U.S. harder for the poor. But adding the $1 million fee for Gold Card applications, millions who are unable to afford the steep cost will be turned away, at risk to have their applications withheld or even rejected completely.
News of Trump’s Gold Card comes on the heels of the revival of his “s**thole countries” rhetoric. The president spoke during a rally in Pennsylvania pondering, “Why is it we only take people from s**thole countries, right?” Trump continued, “Why can’t we have some people from Norway, Sweden, just a few? Let us have a few from Denmark. Do you mind sending us a few people? Do you mind?”
On the flip side, he trashed African and South American countries like Somalia. “We always take people from Somalia, places that are a disaster, right?” he continued. “Filthy, dirty, disgusting, ridden with crime.”
Is This the End of the Green Card?
Short answer: No, but the Gold Card certainly prioritizes wealthy immigrants over the average person looking to start a new life in America. Trump’s card is a complete 180-degree turn from the classic American immigration process– one which has been highly criticized by the president.
Shockingly, Trump doesn’t plan to stop with only the Gold Card. According to NBC News, a $5 million “platinum” card is in the works, which will grant recipients 270 days in the country without being subject to taxes on non-U.S. income.
“This landmark program fulfills President Trump’s promise to attract the world’s most successful entrepreneurs and investors to America while guaranteeing they have skin in the game,” Homeland Security Secretary Kristie Noem wrote in a statement.
