After repeated failed attempts to take down New York Attorney General Letitia James, it seems the Trump administration is back again with another plot against her. Attorneys for James declared the latest investigation into her finances “doomed to fail.” Still, we can’t help but wonder why is President Donald Trump so determined to take AG James down?

The new allegations against the AG surround her hairdresser, who was recently caught up in separate legal trouble. According to the New York Times, the stylist named Iyesata Marsh was indicted in the U.S. District Court for the Western District of Louisiana on bank fraud and aggravated identity theft charges. Now, it seems federal prosecutors might be trying to use Marsh’s case to get more intel on the attorney general.
We previously told you Trump promised to ruin James as payback for the AG suing him in a major civil fraud case in 2022… and winning. His revenge came in the form of an indictment back in October, which James argued was baseless. Days before Thanksgiving, a judge tossed the case against James out, citing the lead prosecutor– MAGA lawyer Lindsey Halligan– should’ve never been appointed.
“The Attorney General’s attempt to install Ms. Halligan as Interim U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of Virginia was invalid,” Judge Cameron McGowan Currie wrote in her order. She added, “there is simply no alternative course to cure the unconstitutional problem” but to dismiss the charges against James. The Justice Department later tried but failed to re-indict her twice.
James responded to the November dismissal, saying, “I am heartened by today’s victory and grateful for the prayers and support I have received from around the country.” She continued, “I remain fearless in the face of these baseless charges as I continue fighting for New Yorkers every single day.”
But clearly, this didn’t mark the end of the James-Trump saga, which brings us to 2026. According to reports, the new investigation into James’ connection to her hairstylist is still in the beginning stages. The Times reported prosecutors want to talk to Marsh about past financial transactions involving James and her campaign.
Attorneys for James said the new probe is an abuse of power and waste of time. Attorney Abbe Lowell wrote in a statement shared with CBS News that the Justice Department “appears to be using its vast resources to try to shake down people based on their association with Ms. James. Like their earlier attempts, this attack on Ms. James is doomed to fail.”
He continued, “This abuse of justice must end.” Trump’s months-long attacks against James points to a greater concern for his allies and enemies alike.
The president is clearly willing to do anything it takes to take down his political foes– even if it means jumping the gun and sabotaging his original case as he did with James. Now, the pressure is on his administration to prove James is guilty of something. As of now, the AG’s reputation remains clean.
