A Hispanic couple in California is speaking out after they say Border Patrol agents racially profiled them. But here’s the kicker… they reportedly voted for President Donald Trump! George and Esmeralda Doilez aren’t the first to express major regrets after electing Trump into office. Now, they’re sharing their story.

Doilez and his wife were heading to a dentist appointment when they stopped to explore the Jacumba Hot Springs area in the San Diego area. But soon after resuming their drive, the couple said a dark, unmarked SUV followed them, activated its siren and pulled them over.
“We didn’t think we had anything to worry about,” Doilez told NBC San Diego. The officers approached their car wearing masks, the couple alleged. “Criminals do that,” the husband continued. “Robbers and thieves do that. Kidnappers do that. And that’s what we’re seeing by our own government.” That’s when Esmeralda started recording.
Doilez and his wife are U.S. citizens, but that didn’t stop officers from accusing them of being undocumented. “The reason why we’re stopping you is because you did U-turns, and there’s a known alien out in the area,” a federal agent can be heard saying in the video.
The couple kept their cool, telling the officers they were simply exploring while on their way to an appointment. That’s when the agent responded, “If you have a dentist appointment, it probably wasn’t the best decision to be out in the middle of nowhere.” Doilez added that he did not consent to a search of their vehicle by the agents.
“We have the right to travel anywhere we want to travel,” the husband added. This prompted the agent to say, “You’re absolutely right you do, and I actually have the right and authority to stop you.” He went on to say there was “reasonable suspicion” to stop and search the couple’s car.
Doilez told NBC 7 he had never been harassed like that before. Given that he and his wife are citizens and were on American soil, they had no reason to believe they would be at risk of alleged racial profiling. They also told the news station they voted for the first time in 2020… for Trump. And again in 2024, the couple casted their ballots for 47th president, who has declared a war on illegal immigration– especially targeting Latinx communities.
In the past few months, Trump has ramped up his ongoing search to “rid America” of all undocumented migrants. This has led to National Guard officers being sent to multiple cities across America and the cancellation of hundreds of thousands of visas, green cards and protected status for migrants already in the country.
Now, Doilez regrets his vote. “I feel shame, guilt, and anger,” he said. “He [Trump] lied to us about going after the worst of the worst,” George said. “He lied on those and he stole our vote.” His wife added, “We can’t let them take our rights. Then we’re nothing.”
A spokesperson for U.S. Customs and Border Protection told NBC 7 Border Patrol agents did not racially profile the couple. Instead, the spokesperson insisted they were responding to “a suspected human smuggling event in a high-risk area.” They added Doilez’s vehicle was “exhibiting suspicious driving behavior consistent with illicit cross-border criminal activity,” prompting the stop.
The Doilez couple is just one of many Latinx voters for Trump now expressing their disapproval of the current administration. Half of Latinx voters chose Trump in November. Now, only 39 percent support him.
