While bragging about the results of his federal takeover of Washington, D.C., President Donald Trump made an eye-opening remark that has the internet talking. Trump, who was found liable for sexual assault two years ago, spoke on what he qualifies as “much lesser” crimes… and his definition is causing chaos on X.

During an event at the Museum of the Bible in D.C. on Monday (Sept. 8), Trump said the nation’s capital is now “the safe-zone city.” He continued, “They said crime is down 87 percent. I said ‘no, no, no, it’s more than 87 percent.’ [It’s] virtually nothing.” According to him, those crime statistics would be even lower if “lesser crimes” like domestic violence weren’t counted.
After seemingly chalking domestic violence up to simply “a man has a little fight with the wife,” folks on social media read Trump for filth. “Trump downplays domestic violence. That’s the real message of this clip,” @BeanzGotGamez said on X.
“Ah yes crime is when Black kids do wheelies in DC but not when white men beat their wives,” another user, @luxeprogressive, wrote. According to data from the National Domestic Violence Hotline, one in three women and one in four men experience domestic violence in their lifetime.
Other folks said they weren’t shocked by the president’s words. “Society downplays the violence men inflict on their partners. It’s literally engrained and has to be unlearned individually,” @GlamazonJay tweeted. “I’m surprised yall still shocked.”
“I mean he sexually assaults women,” @PandorasCashBox said referencing E. Jean Carroll’s 2023 case against Trump. “What’s a little domestic violence,” she continued on X. The president was found liable for sexual abuse in the case.
Another user, @mwdowdsr_dowd, brought up Trump’s multiple rape allegations too. “He probably says the Same Thing about Rape!!!!! Because he’s been Accused of that Too,” he tweeted.
Other folks didn’t know whether to take the president’s words at face value or not. “I don’t even know if this is satire or he’s being real,” @CJayFenty said.
“Folks roll their eyes when ppl point out misogynistic/patriarchal practices,” @mesidotcom began on X. “But here we have the president of the united states inferring that men should be able to beat their wives without consequence…”
@odinikaeze called Trump out for “Manufacturing crisis in one breath, minimizing real harm in the next, then declaring victory over the rubble he helped create.”
Another user, @Needle_of_Arya, said Trump has “brought back the world of my parents’ generation.”
Many online said this is exactly the kind of leader that America voted for. “Millions of voters and non-voters chose that over a prosecutor of dv crimes against women and children,” @HopeisaBison said.
@AngelJonesPhD wrote, “Contrary to popular belief, women’s bodies do not belong to men. Marriage certificates don’t change that. And misogynistic laws don’t either.”
“The framing of this is so insidious,” @ladidaix wrote. “Intimate partner violence shouldn’t be normalized by the most powerful person in the world.”
