Trump Says HBCUs Would Fail Without Chinese Students, and Black Internet Has Strong Thoughts

Without international students from China, Trump said HBCUs would “all be out of business,” and Black folks online are taking issue.

President Donald Trump is giving China credit for keeping many American colleges afloat — including our historically Black colleges and universities (HBCUs). Unsurprisingly, Black folks on the internet were not about to let him get away with that.

Trump told Fox News’ Laura Ingraham on Monday (Nov. 10) that China should be given more credit. “We do have a lot of people coming in from China,” he began. “We also have a massive system of colleges and universities, and if we were to cut that in half… You would have half the colleges in the United States go out of business.” The president continued, “You would have the historically Black colleges and universities would all be out of business.”

He believes that, without revenue from international students from China, HBCUs would literally collapse. But folks online weren’t buying it. “Since when did HBCUs rely on Chinese students ???” @cjgproduxions tweeted, “FBA would be having wall. To wall spaces if Biden said we need immigrant students.”

“No bulls**t. We’re watching the dumbest muthaf***a in history,” @OGPrinceAGAIN said referring to Trump.

It’s no secret that HBCUs are historically underfunded, but no HBCU reported international students as their prime source of income. In fact, international students across all HBCUs only make up about 2.5 percent of total enrollment, and they’re mainly from Africa and the Caribbean, according to The Institute of Education Sciences.

“Funny, I didn’t see a single Chinese student at my son’s freshman ceremony at Morehouse [College in Atlanta] in August. Go figure,” @pettygurl1973 said on X.

@IamDwayneWayne wrote, “Bruh really can’t make a decent talking point without making black ppl either the villain or the scapegoat.” The president has repeatedly been called out for racist comments against Black and brown communities. Many online argued Trump’s latest assessment of HBCUs is yet another racist move.

@DapperDomo tweeted, “This is impressively racist.”

“He thinks black people go HBCU’s bc they can’t get in to the PWU’s,” @K_Ruggs said. “Pure ignorance.”

Another user, @Beymonce, said, “He genuinely believes black ppl are intellectually inferior.”

“Does this orange jackass know what HBCU’s are and why they exist,” @OliviaHoney11 asked. “I can’t believe that some Black ppl went to the polls and actually voted for this man! This is the same racist man who refused to rent apartments to us and tried to get the Central Park 5 the death penalty.”

“Somebody said he thinks the ‘C’ in HBCU means Chinese,” @NotASafeSpace87 tweeted.

“I would like for someone to genuinely try to explain to me what the entire fuck this means,” @MuziKyle wrote.

“Just two bigots casually conversing,” @OhWho_OhLu said. It’s no secret HBCUs are historically underfunded. Many rely on donations from private donors like Jeff Bezos’ ex-wife, philanthropist MacKenzie Scott, who has donated over $300 million to HBCUs over the last six years.

@JerLisa_Nicole said Trump’s comments on Fox News “is 100% about Mackenzie Scott, only.”

However, some folks actually defended the president. “See context matters. After watching the video it seems as if he is trying to protect HBCUs… I hate twitter,” @HuffingtonsPost wrote. “We got plenty of shit to be mad about without manufacturing rage smh.”

“The fact that they are allowing him to speak freely, unchecked and unhinged shows they are getting ready for Act II,” @thekulturebend tweeted.

“Yall really let this dumb b***h back in office to teach Biden a lesson,” @TeeONah wrote. “F**k yall.”

Another user, @HopeisaBison, said, “Imagine surrendering your vote to this jackass.” He continued, “I haaaaate it here.”
