And so it was with R&B star Trey Songz, who reportedly tore up the stage of the Joe Louis Arena in Detroit after his mic was cut.
“He told us how they said that he was taking up too much time, and that they were going to cut his mic,” 15-year-old Niasia Golden said to the Detroit Free Press of Wednesday night's show. “So he kind of sang a song about it, and after that, they turned off the lights and cut his mic.”
Songz can be seen below saying he was going to “go the f—k crazy if they cut my mic off” and then singing, “Don’t do it.”
Online videos then show a shirtless Songz knocking things over on the stage and throwing them.
After the show, police, who say a cameraman was hit and injured with a microphone stand, came to arrest Songz, and he allegedly punched a sergeant in the head backstage, causing the officer to suffer a concussion.
Songz, 32, whose real name is Tremaine Neverson, of Desputanta, Va., now faces a felony charge of assault on a police officer, causing injury, and a misdemeanor of aggravated assault. He was arraigned Thursday.
Songz was a headliner among about nine musicians performing at the Big Show at the Joe, which included performers Chris Brown, Desiigner, Lil Yachty, Young M.A., Icewear Vezzo, Neisha Neshae, Zay Hilfiger and Zayion McCall.
The Free Press reports that about 15 minutes after Songz left the stage, Brown started his performance. And about a half hour into Brown’s act, he brought Songz back onstage.
Later, backstage, the Free Press reports, the police gang-intelligence unit went to arrest Songz, and he was taken into custody after hitting the sergeant. Both the injured cameraman and the sergeant were treated at a local hospital, police said.
Songz’s bond was set at $25,000, and his next court appearance is Jan. 5 at 8:30 a.m. Assault on a police officer causing injury is punishable by up to four years in prison and a fine of up to $5,000. The misdemeanor charge of aggravated assault is punishable by up to a year in jail and a fine up to $1,000, according to the Wayne County Prosecutor's Office.
Police released a smiling mug shot of the “Neighbors Know My Name” singer the next day.
After he was released from Wayne County Jail on Thursday, Songz posted an Instagram photo of him wearing a red “Detroit-vs-Everybody” sweatshirt with the comment, “Everybody.”
