Late rock’n roll icon Tina Turner is back in the headlines, but it’s not because of some momentous anniversary. In fact, the reason why is sure to inspire a few gut laughs.

As evidenced by a series of social media reactions, the official Tina Turner estate found itself in a bit of hot water thanks to a now-deleted post to Instagram earlier this week. In the caption, the estate revealed that it would be selling an “official Tina Turner wig.” Priced at around $935 before taxes and shipping, the wig was created by Turner’s longtime hairstylist Arthur Johns and was made with “100% Remy hair,” per The Hollywood Reporter.
However, shortly after the post–which featured a picture of the wig on a model–went live, fans were quick to drag the hair piece. Many felt like it wasn’t an accurate representation of the hair that the “Simply the Best” singer used to rock back while others took issue with the fact a racially ambiguous model was the one sporting the look.
As a result, Johns felt compelled to defend his work, saying in a statement to The Hollywood Reporter: “Tina wore that hair. If you do your research, you’ll see that curl was very popular in the ’90s and through the early 2000s.”
He continued: “What you don’t see is Tina onstage after 25 minutes, working that hair, throwing her body around and having that hair blow up and just become wild. But that was the hair, that was the hairstyle, and that was the curl on the color that went with that.”
Yet and still, that explanation and the other ones he made on the now-deleted post weren’t enough to keep folks from clowning the creation before the estate decided to pull it from all its social channels.
“Who’s behind the Tina Turner estate and has decided to make wigs in her name NOW??? And why is this wig not giving Tina but rather makeover Sandy at the end of Grease? So many questions!” wrote one user on X/Twitter.
“Maybe you gotta turn it around like in dreamgirls,” said another in a screenshot of the comments on X/Twitter.
“Is the Tina Turner wig in the room with us rightnow?” one other user questioned.
Added another: “That is wig is unsightly , The Tina Turner l grew up watching and listening to ain’t NEVER had no tight a** curls like that.”
