Update: Despite numerous news reports that Tiger Woods would be holding a press conference today at 11:00 a.m. ET, the press conference did not take place, and his agent Mark Steinberg denied that the golf great would be making a "special announcement," according to the Associated Press and CBS.

AJC.com is reporting that the golf world is buzzing about the news that Tiger Woods will make a "special announcement" Monday morning on the Golf Channel. Speculation is mounting that Woods will announce an extended absence from golf.

There was even speculation he might announce his retirement, although he recently said he was optimistic that he would return to his previous form and continue his quest to break Jack Nicklaus' record of 18 major wins.

Woods, 35, who has won 14 majors, announced last week that he would not play in the British Open because of injuries to his knee and Achilles tendon.

Woods has not played since May, when the injuries forced him to withdraw from the Players Championship. The announcement will take place at 11 a.m.
