Tia Mowry has never shied away from being open about her marriage or her children. But her latest revelation might be one of the realest ones yet.

Speaking in a new interview with Parents, “The Game” star dished on her life, parenting her two young children, and what co-parenting looks like now that she’d been divorced from her ex-husband and fellow actor Cory Hardrict. When reflecting on her parenting style, Mowry explained how she’s raising her kids differently from how her parents raised her and her sister.
Specifically, in this new interview, she mentioned that she wasn’t taking the approach that the adults in the situation “made all the rules” and that children were to only listen and obey. Instead, she’s opted to raise her son Cree and daughter Cairo in a way that builds their independence and freedom.
I think growing up, it was definitely a cultural thing where it’s like, ‘My house, my rules,’” she explains. “I didn’t want to do that with my children. I wanted my children to never be afraid to express themselves.”
Later, Mowry dropped a real AF truth bomb when it comes to her boundaries on her kids and their happiness, explaining that it’s not her responsibility as a parent to do that.
“I don’t think it is your job to make your kids happy, I think that it is your job to keep your kids safe, nurture them, guide them,” Mowry explained. “But they have to learn on their own how to make themselves happy, because we don’t want to create co-dependency.”
However, she’s still a proud mom at the end of the day and a woman who’s trying to hold on to the joy that comes with watching her children grow up right before her eyes.
“I’m like, how did this happen? You know, how did this happen?” she said. “But I hold on to every moment, I savor every moment with my kids. So I’m so honored to be their mom.”
Mowry has previously spoken on what it’s like being mostly responsible for her kids now that she’s been divorced, referencing herself at one point as a “single mom” — which drew mixed responses from her fans and followers.
