This Racist Promposal Gotta Go: ‘You May Be Picking Cotton, but We’re Picking You to Go to Prom With Us’

Prom is slowly approaching for many across the nation, which means the extra “promposals” have started flooding the timelines of the internet. Some are cute, some are cringeworthy and a lot of them are just generally doing the most. Prom is slowly approaching for many across the nation, which means the extra “promposals” have started flooding the timelines of the internet. Some are cute, some are cringeworthy and a lot of them are just generally doing the most. But then there’s that special category of racist-ass shit, and these Florida students (dammit, Florida, seriously?) are taking the cake.

“You may be picking cotton but we’re picking you to go to prom with us,” the cardboard sign read. In the image, taken from a now seemingly deleted Instagram account, two white girls are seen standing on opposite sides of a black girl, all three of them grinning and showing all teeth. The caption reads, “She said yes.”

Y’all, there’s already a lot going on in 2017, but here’s what we’re not gonna do.

Yahoo! Style reports that the students apparently attend Coconut Creek, Fla.’s Monarch High School, where a receptionist acknowledged that the principal is “aware” of the photo that was tweeted out earlier this week by Monarch High School alum Jon Aro.

“It is two thousand and fucking seventeen ... ,” Aro captioned his own tweet.

The image instantly garnered attention, getting almost 8,000 retweets and more than 10,000 likes on the social media platform.

And then, of course, the disbelief and dragging commenced. With a swiftness and grace that only black Twitter can achieve, the girl’s alleged Twitter handles and names were revealed, although their identifies have not been independently confirmed. The Twitter accounts seem to have been deleted as well.

Some also slammed the black girl in the picture for letting this happen in the first place.

Aro, 18, who attends Palm Beach State College, told Yahoo! that he posted the image publicly because it was “intolerable.”

“I decided to post it on Twitter because it is 2017 and stuff like this is completely revolting,” he explained. “I had thought we had been past the plight of racism. Apparently, we hadn’t.

“Just as she decided to take a picture of it, let alone post it on social media, I decided to do the same,” he added.

I really and truly can’t. I’m still floored by last year’s KFC-themed promposal in which this young man referred to the girl he was asking to prom as “dark meat.” And now with this? Just, no.
