These Celebs Believe Stevie Wonder Can See And Wonder Says …They Might Have a Point

Johnny Gill recalled how Stevie Wonder "whipped" him, Keith Sweat and Gerald Levert in a game of air hockey.

Stevie Wonder lost his sight shortly after birth when he was born six weeks prematurely in May 1950 with retinopathy of prematurity, an eye disorder caused by abnormal blood vessels throughout the retina. โ€œReceiving too much oxygen in the incubator likely worsened the condition for the tiny baby, leaving [Wonder] blind,โ€ one outlet reported. Yet some fellow celebrities suggest the Saginaw, Mich. native isnโ€™t quite as blind as he lets on.

Why Black-Owned Businesses Face Bigger Risks in a Global Trade War

Here are a few tales โ€” some tall, some kinda plausible โ€” that are making us reconsider everything weโ€™ve ever known about the soul legend.

Shaquille Oโ€™Neal

During an episode of โ€œInside the NBAโ€ in December 2019, Oโ€™Neal shared the story of when he ran into Wonder on an elevator in a Los Angeles building they were staying in. He recalled how Wonder turned to greet him, pressed his floor number, and walked out of the elevator to his unit... alone.

โ€œI went and called every person I knew and told them this story. And they believed me,โ€ Oโ€™Neal said.

Anthony Anderson

Back in September 2016, Anderson appeared on โ€œThe Late Show With Stephen Colbertโ€ where he was asked if he โ€œchallenged Stevie Wonder to a basketball game?โ€

โ€œWhat you all donโ€™t know is Stevie can see,โ€ Anderson replied. โ€œItโ€™s just an act. ... Yes, I did challenge him to a game of one-on-one basketball for a charity event he does for his son for intercity youth. He said, โ€˜Anthony, I donโ€™t want to embarrass you one-on-one, so letโ€™s just do it free throws and he wonโ€ฆ. Stevie Wonder won.โ€

Lionel Richie

โ€œIโ€™m going to tell you something,โ€ Lionel Richie said of Wonder on โ€œThe Kelly Clarkson Showโ€ in December 2019. โ€œIโ€™ve been spending my whole life with him thinking he can see. I know he can see.โ€ He began to tell the funniest story of when he โ€œwent to his [Wonderโ€™s] house. He says, โ€˜Wanna hear a new song? Iโ€™ve got it in the car. Cโ€™mon, go with me.โ€™ โ€

According to Richie, Wonder told him to โ€œsit on the passenger side [and] Iโ€™ll sit on the driverโ€™s sideโ€ before Wonder โ€œcranks the car up and puts the tape in. And then he does this [turns around] and starts driving back down the driveway. And I screamed, โ€˜Stevie! What are you doing?โ€™ And he said, โ€˜Ah, got you, didnโ€™t I?โ€™โ€

Carmelo Anthony

During a podcast episode of โ€œ7PM in Brooklyn,โ€ Carmelo Anthony recalled meeting Wonder for the first time during the 2011 NBA All-Star Game in Los Angeles. While making his way around the locker room, Wonder, according to the former New York Knicksโ€™ baller, approached him and said, โ€œI love watching you play.โ€

Johnny Gill

Now, Johnny Gill is sharing his own experience with Wonder that had him questioning his blindness. Gill appeared on Shawn Stockmanโ€™s โ€œOn That Noteโ€ podcast where he called Wonder โ€œthe master of air hockey.โ€

โ€œThat guy beat all three of us, whipped our ass in air hockey,โ€ the singer remembered, referring to himself, Keith Sweat, and Gerald Levert, who made up R&B group LSG. โ€œIโ€™ll never forget,โ€ he added. When one of the hosts noted how air hockey is a โ€œvisual sport,โ€ Gill couldnโ€™t help but agree.

โ€œI told Keith, I was like, โ€˜Yo, man, we canโ€™t tell nobody this sh*t. I swear to God, he beat all three of us. And I said, โ€˜I donโ€™t care what you say, motherf****r, you can see,โ€™โ€ Gill joked. He even complimented Wonderโ€™s quick reflexes. โ€œHe was boom, boom, and serve it right back and Iโ€™m going, โ€˜Yo, man. Thereโ€™s no way, manโ€™. โ€ฆ I told Keith in the promise we would never tell nobody.โ€

Stevie Wonder himself...?!

Despite the numerous stories over the years from his famous friends, Wonder himself said back in February 2017 that he would tell the truth about his sight while speaking with โ€œTMZโ€ at LAX. When asked if him and his family would appear in a reality TV show, Wonder declined because itโ€™d be โ€œtoo invasive.โ€

He joked how he could make a lot of money, enough to even โ€œbuy a few planes. Maybe fly them?โ€ before admitting he flew a plane before... twice, and landed it. โ€œThis year, I will reveal the truth,โ€ he declared when asked if heโ€™d ever confess the honest status of his sight. Considering the proclamation was said eight years ago, and thereโ€™s been no official word yet, the world may never truly know.
