It’s been four years since John McAfee was found dead in a Spanish prison cell — but according to his third wife, Janice Dyson, the real story hasn’t even begun to be told. During an interview with Matthew Cox Inside True Crime, Dyson opens up about the chilling details surrounding her late husband’s death, and the chilling “a la Epstein” clues behind his alleged prison suicide. And after what she’s seen, Dyson believes there’s far more to her late husband’s death than the public has been led to believe.

John McAfee — the famed software developer behind McAfee Antivirus program — died on June 23, 2021, at 75 years old in a Spanish prison cell while awaiting extradition to the U.S. on tax evasion charges. Spanish authorities ruled his death a suicide by hanging based on preliminary findings, and an autopsy.
That said, Dyson pointed out additional details behind what really took place, and the whole situation just didn’t add up.

He Was Still Alive
“The prison itself opened up an investigation into his death, which from what I was told — is not the standard procedure,” Dyson, 37, told host Matthew Cox. “John was actually alive when they found him,” she added. “Apparently he was found hanging from the window, in his cell. Shoe strings were around his neck… breathing was shallow, the pulse was faint. But still – he wasn’t dead, as it was reported,” Dyson clarified.
Despite a medical team performing life saving services on the tech mogul, Dyson claimed photo evidence showed McAfee’s neck still asphyxiated with the shoe strings — which to her posed as an immediate red flag. “In the pictures, the noose was still around his neck — which means when they performed CPR on him, the noose was still around his neck.”
Dyson — who says she has some medical training — pointed out that a key rule of CPR is to clear the airway. But according to her, that step was completely ignored when prison staff tried to revive McAfee.
He Was Not Suicidal
And that’s not all. Shortly after McAfee was taken into custody, he released a chilling tweet assuring to the public that he had no interest in “rage quitting.” In other words, revealing that his mental space was clear, and he was not suicidal.

“I am content in here. I have friends. The food is good. All is well. Know that if I hang myself, a la Epstein, it will be no fault of mine,” McAfee wrote to his millions of his followers — via his wife — on October 15, 2020.
“So this, is how John McAfee actually died. This is what I want people to know about this situation,” Dyson boldly stated during the interview.
Who Was After McAfee?
“My understanding is that all of his problems derived from what happened in Belize,” Dyson said, revealing that he made the tropical relocation after the passing of his nephew.
“While he was there he was working on a topical anti-virus,” Dyson said, adding that he would give “free samples to the villagers.” According to her, he later had two representatives from the political party visit and ask if he would consider giving a donation — suspiciously, in exchange for perks like land, women, and tax breaks — a generous offer he declined.
“I think he said a week after that, they came and raided his property. He was held for 14 hours handcuffed outside. They came in and they destroyed his lab, shot his dog, and said that he had illegal firearms. But he produced licenses for all his firearms, and he was cleared of all wrongdoing,” Dyson explained. Those same officials returned a week later and asked if he’d reconsidered his donation, to which he declined… again.
“This, for John, began a war. Because he wanted to find evidence that he’d been set up for this raid. And he wanted an apology from the Prime Minister.”
No Stranger To Paranoia
Now outside of this interview, McAfee himself has gone on record in the past revealing that he’s pissed off some very important people, and explained what it was like to live in constant paranoia. It seems fans upheld him as a truth teller, as fans have kept his archives online for over two decades at @officialmcafee.
“I have pissed off every major corrupt power in this world, some of them multiple times” McAfee stated in a video. “I used to be paranoid about, ‘What would happen if an entire army were after me?’ Well fuck me — it happened. In Belize 2012, the entire army was chasing my ass for a month and a half, and the police,” he said.
McAfee, the Tech Pioneer
McAfee started his eponymous company back in 1987 and was operating a BBS system (Bulletin Board System), an early form of an online community that people could access using a dial-up modem before the modern internet as we know it. When a major computer virus “Brain” hit systems, McAfee saw a major opportunity.
“John instantly dialed up a programmer he knew and said, there’s a big opportunity. We need to do something. You know, we want to write some code to combat this virus,” his associate Steve Morgan told the Associated Press. That VirusScan program later paved the way for his company, McAfee Associates.
“I think that’s how ultimately he’d really most like to be remembered. I think a lot of people will remember him as a very troubled soul. Some people will remember him as a criminal. It depends on your age and your exposure to him,” Morgan stated, per the news hub. “He was a true pioneer, not just as a security technologist but as one of the first companies to distribute software over the internet,” he added.
