Mary Cosby, born on October 17, 1972, in Salt Lake City, was the youngest of several children in her family. Though a native Utahn, she grew up under the strict guidance of her beloved grandmother, Rosemary Cosby, feeling compelled to adhere to the family’s rigid standards concerning modesty, behavior, and obedience.

Rosemary “Mama” Cosby, the powerful family matriarch, founded Faith Temple Pentecostal Church. Mary credits Rosemary with raising her spiritually. Within the congregation, Rosemary was often treated like a celebrity, a prominent figure whose authority shaped every part of the Cosby family.

Rosemary married her second husband, Robert C. Cosby Sr., in the late 1960s. Sources often cite a 20-year age difference between the couple. Their marriage spanned nearly three decades, concluding with Rosemary’s death from heart failure in January 1997. Because she died without a will, her passing initiated protracted legal battles over the estate and control of the church between her widower, Bishop Robert C. Cosby Sr., and her adult children.

Mary Cosby’s entrance into the “Real Housewives” franchise brought her to the attention of millions of viewers, but one fact immediately stunned fans: she married her step-grandfather, Bishop Robert C. Cosby Sr., on September 28, 1998.

According to Mary, this was her grandmother’s wish – a directive to preserve the church and the family’s spiritual lineage. Though Mary didn’t want to marry him, she followed through to honor her grandmother.

Social media has circulated claims that Mary was previously married to Dana Harris and that she allegedly required him to publicly announce the end of their marriage before she could take her position as First Lady. Mary has not publicly clarified the details.

Mary Steps Into Church Leadership Role

After the marriage and estate disputes, Mary and Robert Sr. entered into their leadership roles at Faith Temple. Over the years, Cosby has been decribed as the First Lady, vice president, and one of the most influential figures within its day-to-day operations.

Whispers From Inside The Church

In 2021, former Faith Temple members began speaking publicly about their experiences. According to reporting from RealityTea and other outlets, former congregants alleged that she claimed authority to determine who would “go to heaven or hell,” she instilled fear to maintain loyalty, and she referred to herself as God or a divine mediator.

Mary denied the “cult” label.

Mary’s Criminal Charges

In 2021, Mary faced two misdemeanor charges — one for harboring a minor allegedly romantically involved with her son, and another for providing shelter to a runaway. Court documents stated the teen stayed overnight at Mary’s home in April 2021 without parental permission.

Mary pleaded not guilty, and both charges were later dismissed.

Mary’s Offensive Statement

The RHOSLC star’s reputation began to spiral after she made a controversial — and racist– statement about Jen Shah. Due to the backlash was immediate, prompting Mary to issue an apology. With the growing tension between Mary and production, she chose not to attend the reunion and stepped away from RHOSLC for a season.

Civil Lawsuit Battle

Mary, Robert Sr., and Faith Temple filed a civil lawsuit accusing two executives of United Security Financial, the church’s for-profit financial group, of embezzling money, mismanaging funds, and abusing employees. The suit sought multi-million-dollar relief and outlined allegations of intimidation and financial misconduct.

Robert Cosby Jr.’s Struggles

During filming, Mary shared a vulnerable moment about her son, Robert Jr. mental health and substance use with Xanax and cocaine. In November 2025, he was arrested for breaking into a house through a dog door and assaulting someone inside. The star described the incident as a “blessing in disguise,” saying it forced him to finally get help.

TLC Investigative Documentary

In Nov. 2025, TLC announced their multi-part documentary/investigative special, “The Cult Of The Real Housewife.” The special will give viewers a deeper look into the arranged marriage of Mary and her step-grandfather, the Faith Temple allegations, and her family history.

Mary Cosby Responds

During her BravoCon appearance, Mary publicly shut down the documentary’s claims, insisting that the accusations surrounding her church and family are false. The documentary is set to be released January 1, 2026.
