(The Root) — The jobs crisis isn't a story we left behind in 2012; as we enter the new year, employment is on everyone's mind! In the third webisode of The Root Live, taped on Jan. 7, host Harriette Cole was joined by Dedrick Muhammad, executive director of the NAACP's Financial Freedom Center; executive recruiter Volora Howell; career coach Leslie Granston; and Portia Wu, special assistant to the president on labor and workforce issues, to field questions from viewers about jobs to look out for in 2013.
Muhammad said that digital jobs are a hot spot — particularly for African Americans, many of whom are coming out of college with computer science and technology majors. But he offered a warning. "The only thing about these new careers is that the industry can radically change from one year to the next because of some kind of new invention … ," he said. "So it's a career where you really have to make sure you're at the edge of what is happening."
