The Problem With Snoop Dogg Receiving an Icon Award From BET Months After Performing For Trump

Snoop received the Ultimate Icon Award, but many online felt like it was undeserved considering his support for Trump.

On Monday (June 9), Snoop Dogg received the Ultimate Icon Award at the 2025 BET Awards. While his speech and subsequent tribute were both off the chain, many online were quick to point out the apparent hypocrisy over the "Gin & Juice" rapper's honor...and to be honest, they just might have a point. We'll explain.

As we previously told you, the rap legend came under fire back in January when it was announced he’d be performing at the pre-inauguration Crypto Ball in celebration of President Donald Trump. This move was in stark contrast what he said in 2017, when he took other artists to task for performing for Trump during his previous presidential term. So naturally, the change in tune earlier this year drew ire from his fans.

However, it clearly wasn't enough to deter fans (or BET for that matter) from giving him a prestigious honor. And while aligning to to a president who has literally referred to African nations as "sh*thole countries" doesn't take away from the fact that Snoop is a monumental figure in the rap game -- it does beg the question of whether or not all his accolades and street cred are keeping him from reaping the same consequence that Chrisette Michele got back when she performed at Trump's first inauguration in 2017.

Let's face it: Michele got dragged for filth over that decision and she's been virtually exiled ever since. But Snoop, as well as a handful of other rappers, have consistently leaned towards Trump's direction in one way or the other but have yet to face any real results because of it. The difference here is understandably curious, is it not?

Just months ago, Snoop was getting dragged. And now, months later, he's getting honored. How's that for hypocrisy? And just in case you though we were alone in noticing this, just one glance at users on X/Twitter will show you otherwise.

"Snoop Dogg being embraced at the BET Awards after selling out to Trump is insane. We require zero accountability from Black Celebrities," wrote one user.

"Chrisette Michele’s career is over and the men get to thrive for the same shit," said another.

"Did BET just forget that Snoop Dogg performed for Trump and that Dr. Dre is an abusive piece of shit?" one other user questioned.

Added another, "I’m sorry but #bet should have skipped honoring Snoop this year seeing how he disappointed the entire black community by going back on his word and supporting Trump at his inauguration. Funny how ppl were jiggaboos for performing in 2020 & now that he had a chance it was excuses."

One other user said: "Snoop dogg was one of the coolest n****s ever till he sold out for Trump."
